At Second Sight Opticians, we carry out a thorough check of your vision, but this is just a segment of the exam. As part of the routine, we examine the health of each component of the eye using various pieces of technical equipment. The main health checks we do are:
Slit lamp examination
This is used to check the health of the front of the eye - the cornea, conjunctiva, sclera, lids and lashes. It helps to determine if there is any dry eye syndrome, blepharitis, infection or abrasions. It also helps to check the components further inside the eye, looking at the crystalline lens for signs of cataracts, and the flow of fluid from the eye which is associated with glaucoma.
Ocular Pressure check
This uses a machine called a non-contact tonometer, which measures the pressure inside your eyes, and it works by gently puffing air into your eyes. It then measures the time it takes for the air to rebound off your eye and back to the sensor, and since the time is proportionate to the pressure, it calculates the result instantly! This is one of the checks we do for glaucoma.
Fundus Exam
This examines the back of the eye - the retina, macula, and optic disc. There is an array of different things that the Fundus can show, from a healthy eye, to high blood pressure, diabetes, macula degeneration, retinal tears.. the list goes on, and it's why this is one of the most important parts of our eye health check. This examination is done using the slit lamp in conjunction with a really high powered magnifying lens called a Volk Lens.
Motility Test & Pupil Function
This test checks the 6 extrinsic ocular muscles attached to your eyes, to make sure they move together smoothly in the correct direction. It helps to reveal any binocular issues such as double vision, or difficulties converging when reading. These symptoms are often corrected by incorporating a prism into the lenses.
Pupil function involves making sure they respond to light exposure - correctly getting smaller when light is presented, and the getting bigger when the light is removed. If they are not functioning as expected, then further investigation may be needed to detect for any neurological issues
Field of vision test
This tests your peripheral vision to make sure there are no significant blind patches in your field of vision. A number of small flashing lights are presented while you look straight ahead at a screen. If there are any that you do not see, they get plotted on a circular diagram. This help us to recognise if there is a field defect and why. Certain patterns in the diagram correlate to specific eye conditions. Glaucoma for example will show vision loss in the outer edge of the circle, where as macular degeneration will show a central field loss.
Additional Dilation Exam
This is not part of the general eye exam, but may be carried out for further investigarion if required. This involves putting drops into the eyes to temporarily dilate the pupils. This is effectivley like opening the window to your eyes even wider so the optometrist can get a more thorough view of the back of the eyes. This is typically done for people showing signs of cataracts, macular issues, and is also done in diabetic screenings - the list goes on. If the optmetrist needs to do this extra test for you, everything will be fully explained.
